How do you KNOW that you are saved?

A lot of people claim to be saved, but are clearly not. So, how do you KNOW you are saved? Is it really just saying a simple prayer a BAM, that's it forever? Or do you have to live a particular way? Can you just believe your way into Heaven, or are you going to be one of the many that are surprisingly sent away on Judgement Day? How do you know?
